February is Cancer Prevention Month, making it the perfect time to take charge of your health. While not all cancers can be prevented, many can be detected early—and early detection makes a real difference. Your annual physical is one of the most powerful tools you have to protect your long-term health.
Why Annual Physicals Matter
An annual physical is more than a quick check-in. It’s your opportunity to review your overall health, discuss concerns, update recommended screenings, and spot potential issues before they become symptoms. When cancer is detected early, treatment is often more successful and less invasive.
During your visit, your CHC provider can help determine which screenings are right for you based on your age, personal history, and risk factors. Common cancer related screenings include:
- Blood Tests (including hepatitis B & C)
- Breast cancer screening (i.e. Mammograms)
- Cervical cancer screening (i.e. Pap smear/HPV testing)
- Colorectal cancer screening (i.e. Colonoscopy)
- Lung cancer screening (i.e. CT Scan)
- Prostate cancer screening (i.e. PSA)
- Skin cancer screening
- Oral cancer screening
Your CHC provider will guide you through what you need and when, ensuring you stay on track with evidence-based preventive care.

Healthy Lifestyle Choices Add Up
Cancer prevention isn’t only about screenings; it’s also about the everyday choices you make. Small, consistent habits can help lower your risk over time, such as:
- Staying active
- Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein
- Avoiding tobacco/vaping
- Limiting alcohol
- Managing stress
- Swapping sugary drinks for water
- Taking the stairs or adding a daily walk to your routine
Remember, prevention is about progress, not perfection. Even one positive change can benefit your future health.
